Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.

I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.

Back from Thailand!

Well i'm back after having a super time in Thailand, all 2 weeks of it, and going with my best friend kind of made it feel all the more special.
The range of wildlife out there was astonishing, and I took well over 300 pictures of just moths alone, which will be sorted out in due course.
Here's a teaser of a few of the species I found, most of them are going to be unnamed as the information on Thai Moths is very scarce and most species were only described as late as 1999, I may even have found a new species for Thailand, now that would be exciting!
Most of the species were found around the huge temple at Doi Suthep just to the west of Chiang Mai City in North Thailand, it was just to the side of the temple where what looked like a metal hallide bulb lit up a huge board with information about the temple, that interested me for about 10 seconds and then taking a step forward and releasing it was covered in moths, hundreds! and both sides as well.
As I didn't expect to have my own MV equivalent trap up the mountain, I did pack my 22w Actinic which I ran nearly every night and that did attract some great species as well.

Every night it ranged from 25-29c, very humid and stormy but with little rain which was perfect, and even under clear skies with a full moon the moths were in abundance (not like here in the UK!)

The books I bought for about £18 each, a bargain! (don't ask me why the picture won't upload the right way around hmm)

    Cheers, yes you are right. more photos probably going on my Flickr page soon, as I haven't the time to double post.
