Crazy catch

A rather superb catch on Monday night here in my little garden in North-east Stevenage and with some really stand-out species featuring.

The day had been sweltering with high humidity and highs of 25 degrees, it felt a lot hotter (I was strimming all day at work).

The trap was brimming with moths at 4am. I somehow have done a bit of brain training and get up pretty much on the dot, half hour of sorting moths and then back to bed for an hour and a half!

60 species was quite remarkable for here.

Best moths of the nights were two garden second records of the beautiful Scarlet Tiger and the rather non-descript Dotted Rustic.
White Satin is also uncommon here too, a smashing example.

Swallow Prominent was a bit of a surprise, between broods and not encountered here in June before.

Some of the moths are still refusing to have their photos taken, so will be released tonight.

To get 15 new species was quite remarkable, that's 31 new species over 3 nights here.

15 new species were added to the running total.

Garden species count for 2020 now upto 261.
