Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.
On this Blog you will find up-to-date records and pictures.
I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.
Please also check out the links in the sidebar to the right for other people's Blogs and informative Websites.
Thanks for looking and happy Mothing!

Field Trip - Chippenham Fen - 20/06/20

I had a cracking session at Chippenham Fen, waaaay back on the 20th of June, the first of three field traps over the last 3 weeks.

I set up 4 traps in total, spread across the wetland site, and 1 trap in the adjacent woodland (This is always worth doing, as you will get different species).

Once again, the 250w Trap did the business, it was swarming past midnight and quite hard to get near the trap for fear of treading on moths (the main reason I always put a white sheet under the trap, to minimise casualties).

Highlights for me were as follows..

Coleophora conspicuella (a recent colonist), Cosmopterix lienigiella (new to me), Cosmopterix scribaiella (at least 10 of this rare moth), Hellinsia carphodactylus (spotted amongst the many Adaina microdactyla), Lunar Yellow Underwing, Scallop Shell (mint condition and plenty to the traps) and last but not least, Scythris picaepennis (a new moth for me).

So all in all, to get two new species for my UK list and a bountiful supply of rare and beautiful moths was delightful.

I counted all of the Macros, but wimped out on the micros as I was thwart with tiredness at 3am!

Below are the results.

Catch Report - 20/06/20 - Chippenham Fen - Cambridgeshire - 4 traps - 1x 125w MV Trap, 1x 160w MBT Trap, 1x 250w Clear MV Robinson Trap & 1x 40w U-Tube + 15w Actinic tube & 15w Synergetic tube Trap
