Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.
On this Blog you will find up-to-date records and pictures.
I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.
Please also check out the links in the sidebar to the right for other people's Blogs and informative Websites.
Thanks for looking and happy Mothing!

Chippenham Fen - Field Trip - 13/06/21

My second trip of the year to the fantastic wetland site that is, Chippenham Fen.

Sunday the 13th had been a really hot day, with highs of 27 degrees and with barely a cloud in the sky, the temperature was still a remarkable 22 degrees just as the sun was setting at 9:30pm, I was ready for a good night!
Despite clear skies, the temperature was still holding up nicely even whilst packing up at 2am, it didn't feel at all cool, but I had to don a jumper to stop the various Diptera from biting me! I was literally covered in bites the next day.
But the pain was all worth it...

So far i've logged 181 species over 4 traps. I still have a few specimens pending with Graeme Smith for dissection, which may contain a few very good species (tentatively that is).

Good confirmed records from the night are as follows

Ancylis laetana (3rd County record and last seen in 1972)
Ancylis upupana (New to Cambridgeshire)
Elachista gleichenella (2nd County record)
Endothenia nigricostana (7th County record and my second from here)
Olindia schumacherana (5th County record)

But, as usual there are just so many nice species to see here, it was great catching up with a few of the local specialities.
