Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.

I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.

Garden mothing, 4 nightly round-up

Slipping behind now with my posts, either i'm too tired (from the heat and work) or out running traps somewhere... it's such a bad but addictive habit!
 
Here are the latest species from my garden from Friday night until Monday night. 

A new species was added to my garden list, Alder Moth. This stunning Noctuid with it's slate grey base colour streaked boldly with charcoal, seems to be having a good year here in Herts with it popping up in most people's gardens.
There wasn't just one either, but two! Brilliant.
 
Other notables were Parapoynx stratiotata, only my 4th garden record, Incurvaria oehlmanniella which again is only my fourth and Broken-barred Carpet which is only the 3rd example for the garden.
 
With these mild and muggy nights, the micros have really started to turn up now in good numbers.
 
On numbers, my garden is still the poorest it's been in nearly a decade of living here, numbers have crashed, but species diversity has picked up since last week.

Moth species for 2021 in the garden now stands at 161.
