First 200+ species - Chippenham Fen - Cambridgeshire - 02/07/21

On a warm and humid night, but a little breezy at times... Chippenham Fen delivered once again. An insect paradise the welcome board says, and it certainly is that!

I set up 4 traps once again, with a generator positioned further down into the reedbeds with an Actinic (Hoping to intercept some species micros) Indeed it worked, with a single Monochroa hornigi to that very trap.

The moths came in thick and fast, and anything unusual was potted up for closer inspection half way through the night.

The diversity was incredible, and finally with numbers more expected for this time of year.  

 

I was gutted though, I missed a really stunning form of Acleris hastiana that landed next to me on the collar of one of my traps, fumbled with a pot and it got bumped into by another moth... gone and never to be seen again despite a thorough search, knackers!

I was lucky, whilst going through another trap I found another! Again a form that I haven't come across before, but pale in comparison to the orange/red with white and yellow streaks that the one I missed had.

 

Two good size Coleophora species were potted up that could be interesting and will be investigated, luckily very photogenic for a change.

 

And I waited a full hour for the Oblique Striped to open it's wings! 

 

Two new species for my records were both Monochroa hornigi & Monochroa tenebrella.

 

Eucosma conterminana was new for my UK records.

Once again, i'm just blown away at how good this place is for moths, and the habitat that supports the species that are recorded is owed to the team that manage it.
