FlyinginFordham: Chippenham Fen - Field Trip

I was joined by Leslie at Chippenham Fen for a mothing session last Wednesday.

The day had been nice and warm with highs of 26 degrees, and there was no wind at all. Setting up at 8:30pm it was still around 20 degrees, but it did drop a bit under clear skies to around 12 degrees at packing up time 2 hours after midnight.

4 lights were ran in different areas of the fen, and all traps had different species present.

It was great working the traps all night, exhausting and back-breaking mind, Leslie listing as we went round, when I got to 3 or 4 new names to add I was asked to slow down! Finally moth species have improved.

177 species were logged and the list included some really good quality moths.

We managed 2 Rannoch Looper's, that made it 3 in a week after the one in my garden. Reports across the country have replicated a mini boom for this wandering species.

Valerian Pug was a new species for the site for me, as was Coleophora albidella (Identified under a hand lens by the gingery tuft underneath it's palps).

Stigmella trimaculella was a completely new species for me, although i've heard that the mines are easier to find than the adults, a Stigmella that can be identified visually is a rarity.

What a night, it certainly took me a few days to recover.
