FlyinginFordham: Chippenham Fen - Field Trip

At the start of September I was joined by Leslie Gardiner at our local nature reserve that is, Chippenham Fen, a place that i've become very fond of and which always seems to throw up a surprise on nearly every visit.

The 6th of September was no different, a new for site Epinotia sordidana was the best moth of the night, only the 4th county record from what I can see.

I've taken this species only once before in broad-leaved woodland two years ago in Hertfordshire, a fairly unremarkable looking brown tortrix.

Other good records included the joint latest record of Celypha cespitana, the uncommon and identifiable Elachista bisulcella by it's two-tone central band and a rather smartly coloured Grey Pine Carpet.

I even managed a good beetle, the weevil Platystomos albinus which was new to me.

105 species was a good result and Leslie did a great job of keeping me updated with the macro moth list as they came in.

I thought this would be my last field trip, but we would be hitting the brecks just 3 days later as the warm weather was set to continue.
