Chippenham Fen - Field Trip - 21/06/24

A window of opportunity arised last Friday night, and after watching The Lion King with the family, I was packed up and ready to meet up with an old friend at nearby Chippenham Fen.

 

I didn't arrive until nearly 9pm, but being just +1 day after summer solstice, this didn't matter, as it was still light past 10pm.

The evening was warm and muggy, but the sky did clear and then the wind picked up, in fact it was windy for most of the night, gusting on and off and not ideal.

Still we soldiered on and amassed a fair old list, nothing like previous years I must add, but 181 species was not to be sniffed at.

There were some really good moths.

Aproaerema taeniolella was new for me and confirmed by the underside of the forewing.

A nice big female Archips crataegana was also nice to see (females are never commonly encountered for this species).

The beautiful Bordered Beauty was another highlight for us both, a regular moth here but always a treat to see.

There were a couple of pine associated tortrix moths as well, namely the tiny Epinotia nanana and the darkest Exoteleia dodecella i've ever taken (and which got the heart pumping for a few minutes).

A female Swift species was also initially mis-identified as a Map-winged, but of course after some sleep, it was to be a Gold Swift.

Best moth of the night appears to be a Haplotinea insectella, a moth not seen in Cambridgeshire since 1905 at Wicken Fen. It looks the part, but will need dissecting for verification.

All in all not bad for the time of year.
